SPEECHLESS by IBE CHIEMEZIE

SPEECHLESS by IBE CHIEMEZIE

Seventeenth October, two thousand and thirteen was the day
A day I felt was just  like every other one.
Although it was my birthday,
the last thing on my mind was celebration.
The original plan was to stay quietly indoors
and make no noise about it at all
But for my friends.
These people their love for me never ends.
They protested,
in fact they revolted.
They said to me, 'Young man, today is not just your birthday,
today is World's Chimex Day! "
On Demand, I stepped out of that closet of mine,
And they gave me a treat of a lifetime.
The deluge of messages I got,
to my eyes brought joyful tears so hard I fought
Some said I was cute , others said I was handsome,
some others said I was much more than awesome
But a tweet from the world famous Kelly Hansome
Made me feel like the biggest and brightest of the stars - the sun.
If love was drugs, I got overdose.
If love was alcohol, I was intoxicated.
If love was water, I got an ocean.
If love was a mountain, I stood on Everest.
Right now I sit back and reminisce,
Giving thanks to the one who's made my life a masterpiece.
The one who's blessed me with joy and bliss
And set my life on the path of increase
He is the King of Kings
The Lord of Lords and The Prince of Peace.
To my boss and mentor-Obyno
To my sister and second mother- Ijelo
To my superstar sibling and confidant- Chiso
This is a word of appreciation from your lil' bro- Emilo
To my God-given parents-Mummy and Daddy,
Nothing is what I am without your support
and the least I can say is, 'God bless you.'
To my cousins, I say 'Thank you.'
God's best gift to man is family,
and to have as part of mine, Sweetdiva and Chidi,
I count myself lucky.
As I drop my pen in the basket of love,
Knowing full well that by God and Man, I am loved,
the word of appreciation I want to give is endless,
But like Michael Jackson, I am SPEECHLESS.

#WarofWords - Who is like thee by Amodu Segun

Nice piece,
very nice.
Got me thinking,
there can only be One Supreme Being.
Before and after Him, there is no one else.
And you know what,
Spoken Word Poets are not supreme being,
but they are a special breed,
and come June 30th, 2013,
only one poet will standing be at the end of War Of Words.

Who is like thee by Amodu Segun

i was in search for the Greatest, this a great test
i know i'll find then eventually rest
will put distractions behind even if i hunger or thirst.
will look at the world's geniuses that have done the unthinkable,
those that have made life in 1 way or the other comfortable.
then, select who has the best stunts among them,
1 who no scientist or critic can condemn.
Time to talk of great works,
follow me as i think outside the box
Are you ready? I'm on the quest to find who is like thee.

Who is like thee?
is it the great builder that sees a flat land, then explores his Creativity?
from the land, he makes the house with the sand, and then the City.
could it be the intelligent author that converts 1 sentence to the best selling book?
trust me, you can't say any of these has an element of luck or you are smelling fluke.
1 of these guys has to be the greatest, but i stop to ask myself this.
i wish i could write boldly on a vest; "did they make their creativity? please.
i know it's not easy to write down, or keep a building steady
so i look left, up, right, down - still searching for who's like thee

who is like thee?
is it the inventor of the plane that got the idea by studying a Bird?
or the maker of the lie detector to help reduce Fraud?
could it be the physicist that performed the 1st experiment on Elasticity?
or the scientist that from nowhere discovered Electricity.
see, these guys works are fabulous, and out of this Earth
but which 1 made for us, a machine to prevent Death?
i know its not easy to be extremely intelligent and Nerdy
here i am still busy asking; 'who is like thee?'

who is like thee?
is it the herbalist that empowers others with his charm?
or the magician that also walked on water despite weighing over a 100 kilogram?
could it be the head of cult with a name like "skulls", that is as vital as the Suture?
is it the spiritualist that throws some balls, looks at the palm and tells you about the future?
see, these guys superpowers are firm, let's be honest
but who will they spit on and reply with "father, forgive them", answer, be my guest.
i know it's not easy to be powerful, and not be a bit randy.
i can no longer keep this cool, for the last time i ask; "who's like thee?"

who is like thee?
"who is like thee?" has been the question.
which inventor can invent inventions that will invent inventions
if you need me define invention, then you need divine intervention.
who made the galaxy, and the whole universe?
who the poets that from a-z, write every verse?
who made every creature; the righteous, the sinner and the herbalist?
who made the pope and the priests that we respect their nature, i can go on till i make a full list.
see, he was the one that was beaten, and still prayed for his enemies
he is right there in heaven sitting
he in powerful, can use a little kitten to defeat large armies
he is mighty in battle
on a thousand hills, owns all the cattle.
he is the master of time that doesn't need a watch on his wrist
he never fails, changes or lies.
he is the one who even Einstein; the greatest scientist says doesn't play dice
as mighty as he is, he wants to be our daddy.
he is the only 1 that can give you peace, thank you God, cos there is None like thee!

CLANGINGS: This is not a poem...!!!!

This is not a note about Ex-Lovers
It is about the stunning unbefriendable women across world
Fenced away by the unseen wings of space

This is not an epistle
It is about la-di-dahs who in 4745 days of their love lives,
Never ever bordered to send a love letter
Or receive a gift of rose either

This is not a poem per se
It is a reminder to not hold back a good thing
Because, you temporarily are just a custodian
Of a heart- a baby’s heart seething

This is not a battleground
It is the gun-sounds of your heart-shots
Rendering my body into a debris

This is not about heartaches and breakups
It is trusting my teen daughter to not rely on my opinion
To date a guy I know not from Eve

This is not about stringing words or painting hieroglyph-ed prescriptions
For blind patients
It is about a deaf man blowing a cello to dead men, walking

This is not about uncertainty or errata
It is about cats caterwauling at the sight
Of hapless dancing butterflies

This is not about sextractions or macho-quotients
It is about knowing the truth
Tasting the truth, yet testing the truth
In order to believe the lies

This is not a poem
So I need you to stop looking out for tropes
Where there is no imagery or symbols

This is not about dance macabre
It is lilting on a foot and scratching your itch
when all you got is peppered nails of hunger

This again is not about smashing
It is about varying pleasure with pressure
Twitching and switching tongue-speed,
at mastered angles of attack

This is not about Amnesty or honesty
It is about Travesty
Of handling hoodlums consent
Of reincarnation with blazing cudgels

This is not about incarceration
It is about death coming
Brandishing kisses and saying
In a familiar dreamy voice-
‘I bring you good news from yonder’

This is not a screaming contest
It is a whimpering release
Sliding disbelief into disaffection
And expecting anything short of regrets

This is not about a loveless world
It is about finding a best friend
And hoping not to be friend-zoned for life

This is not about getting lost in lust
It is in you looking for me
And me finding you at the crossroad

This is not about making heaven or love
It is about ascending to the climax of freedom
And resisting return to the waste and chaos of landfills

This is not about ‘red things’; red chili pepper
Red-lips
Bloody hot things you dare not sup with your mouth;
It is about the riotous fluxes sieving blazing load-stones

This not about banking on God or
Maidens seeking sexual deposits
It is about temples where miracles are procured
With banged-mints in the bank of God

This is not about guns
It is not about school kids
It is not about News men and new lies
It is about unaccounted cadavers whisked off at birth

This is not about emergencies and hospitals
It is about caregivers decapitating invalids
To allow beds for jaundiced parents of haemophilia

This is not about birth marks or stretchmarks
Rather, it is about the stub that registers the sacrifices you’ll never need to make again

This is not about defloration on a tomb-slab
It is about rage tattooed on the inner thighs of
Forsaken kids.

This is not about Fate or Faith
Neither is it about the gospel
It is about indissoluble lies frothing
In fabricated mouths

This is not a dirge
Nor is it a requiem in the funeral of a killer
It is about the unshed tears for kids who died kissing bombs in sleep
Guessing they were toys in real life

This is not a preachment about God
It is a soliloquy about demigods selling dogs
To feed their gods of unbelief

This I say is not your everyday verses
Or clichéd words strewn on paper
It is about the wounded lines you hear with
Your eyes
The forked words inveigling your eardrums

This is not about selfishness
It isn’t even about you
It is about the me in you
The you in me
it is about us

Believe...!!!!

I got up early one morning
And tried to worship God like I usually would do
I attempted to pray, but couldn’t get the words out
So I thought to sing – that always worked, but not that day

I was grateful to be alive, but didn’t know how to tell the ONE who made that possible
I was thankful to be saved, but couldn’t quite find the words to convey this
And then I turned, looked at  my husband and smiled
In quick succession, I recalled how I birthed my children and then I sighed
Almost like in a cinema, I watched how my life had been – my past flashed before me; scene after scene

I remembered my moments of shame, of guilt and how sad I once was
But then, a victorious chant of “halleluyah” filled my thoughts
And then I realized that it is a lot easier to worry over what had been lost; what could have been
Than it is to be glad for what you have left; what can still be achieved
He put a song on my lips that day – a melody in my heart:

Only believe
Just believe
Yes believe
That everything will be alright
Only believe
Just believe
You’ve gotta believe
There is hope for your soul.

Last man standing...!!!

I am the last man standing,
If everyone is falling
And standards are failing,
For me there won’t be any compromisjg,
To do what’s right I won’t be hesitating,
Will keep my light shining,
No more slacking, dulling or hating.

I am the last man standing,
Life can be demanding
my values I won’t be undermining
Truth and justice I will be upholding.
Cos in God I am believing
Since people can be be deceiving

I am the Last man standing,
Got things I’m targeting,
Everyday I’m hustling
Surviving and thriving,
No room to be complaining,
Cos the top is where I am going.
Join me if you ready and willing
So together we will keep standing.

Intermission....(as it happened on Easter Sunday 2000 years ago).

Christ died and because he bore our sins He went to hell. The devil was right about that but what he did not count on was what would happen when Christ got to hell. You see up to a second after Christ died the devil thought he was smarter than God but as soon as Christ entered hell well let’s just say  ‘all hell was let loose on hell’.
The angels who up onto the last moment had their heads bowed in pain, which the demons had mocked’ were suddenly the ones laughing. Oh boy did they laugh. But before they laughed they fought. The devil thought he could claim Christ just as he claimed so many men of faith.  Remember the righteous people who rose up and went about preaching after the death of Christ there was a battle for them.
When Christ descended, the circle and the multitude went with him ready to fight for their King with a determination to turn hell into heaven if need be. Imagine their happy surprise when Christ declared “Lucifer I have come for the souls of the righteous u have kept trapped in Sheol.” “What do you mean u have come for? You are a dead sinner now remember?” Retorted the devil "Lucifer the sad thing about you is you never learn. I am God. I know the end from the beginning” Christ declared.  “Did you really think you can blindside me?" He asked? His glory fully restored He shined brighter than the sun. His glory brought light even to the darkest places in hell. At that moment, understanding came upon the multitudes of angels and they began to laugh with relief, joy and respect for the Ancient of days. "What is so funny to you all?" Asked Lucifer. "Answer me!!" He bellowed when no one seemed inclined to answer. "Poor Lucifer" said Michael," You were never the smartest were you? Then again if you were you won't have dared God. This is what happened. Christ was sent to die from the beginning. He is the sacrifice for sin. You know God can't behold sin; there was only 1 way to get the sins of the world heaped on Christ. Make you believe this was your ultimate play. Make you think you could win this battle by keeping you ignorant of the details. A rightoues man can't enter hell Christ needed the sins for two reasons to come and set these ones you held captive free and ensure that anyone who calls on Jesus Christ would be set free even the generations to come. So you see you never stood a chance.” “No!!!!” Screamed the devil "No. Not possible!" As he screamed the demons that had not being paying attention turn to see what was wrong. "Why is he so upset on our victory day?" Verflucht asked Elend who was beside him. “How would I know? Are we not here together?" Elend and Nutzlos responded eyeing Verflucht. "I won't allow this I would fight this!” Shouted devil “O my please do" said Dinami "I was hoping you would say that" said angel Chará another member of the circle.
And so swords were drawn and the angels who were laughing just a few minutes ago looked menacing enough to kill just with a look. This definitely sent some demons running to different hiding places. "Stay your swords!" ordered Christ "Give me the righteous they are all I came here for." Christ said. "You can't have them" stammered devil "they have sinned. And the blood of goats and cows can’t purify them. ” “Yes they have but I have been wounded for their sins, bruised for their iniquities and the chastisement for their peace has been laid upon me. I have purified them with my blood. They are not yours anymore." As Jesus Christ spoke those words the chains that bound the righteous fell away. And they began to go to earth and preach the gospel.  "Apollyon, who is on the winning side now?" Asked angel Próodos.
The demons began to wail and mourn throwing themselves into the fire. All of them trying to avoid the devil and realising that they would never win. No matter what they do they could never win God and now that God has given mankind Jesus Christ any man that trust in Him would be saved.
All the while this was happening in hell, the angels who had stayed in heaven with God laid prostrate before the Jehovah worshiping as the events began to unfold and their understanding was opened. God sat on his throne smiling with pride at his son and laughing as the angels taunted and the demons. It was a happy day in heaven and if only mankind had been aware of what was happening, it would have a day of celebration as well.
So as we move from Good Friday to Easter, let us remember that the Saturday in between was not left empty we might not have named it but on this day too God was ensuring a space for those who walk in the path He has laid before them.

Crucifixion..!!!

At the point of Jesus’s arrest when He said ”put away your sword” many believe He was talking to the disciples who were trying to defend him actually He was talking to the host of angels who had drawn their swords to slay the men who had dared to lay a rough hand on Christ. This is what happened:

Every time Jesus walked with him disciples, He had his body guards (angels with blazing fiery swords) walking with him they moved in an unbreakable circle round him. We would call them the circle. When Judas and those who arrested Jesus came close the circle sensed that they would try to harm their king but Christ silently commanded them to let them through. The demons behind these men started to jeer and sneer at the circle.
As they arrested Jesus and started to manhandle him the circle surged forward, swords drawn and ready to do battle that was coincidentally the same moment a man cut off another’s ear so when Jesus said “put away your sword”,  we assumed he was talking to the ear cutting man but he was actually talking to the circle.
At this point the upset members of the circle sent a delegate to talk to angel Michael maybe he can get God’s permission to destroy the mortals who are being rude to their king. We would call the delegated angel Dinami. “Do you mean to tell me that they dragged my King away in your presence and you all did nothing? Michael bellowed Dinami takes a step back before responding “it was out of our hands sir that’s why I was sent to ask you to talk to God so we would know how to proceed.” Michael looks at Dinami like he has grown 4 heads “Christ is His son, His ONLY son. of course he wants us to protect Him. Slay the mortals as for the demons make them regret the day they aligned themselves to Lucifer.” “You would do no such thing” said the booming voice at the sound of it the angels fell to their knees and bowed their faces. The voice belonged to God. “Dinami do as Christ ordered and stay out of it. Be by his side but offer no help and no protection do you understand me?”  “But God He was dragged away like a criminal a whole King of the Earth.” “That is the least of all He is to face” came the response from the booming voice. Surprised every angel in heaven and the 24 elders looks at the face of God for the 1st time and that’s when they see that he is in pain tears streaming down his face. Their surprise becomes shock. “God!! You are crying?” Hearing this, the 24 elders turn and look at the earth then they see. They see Jesus being slapped punched, whipped, and mocked they gasp and double over as though they are in pain too. On hearing the gasp Michael and Dinami turn to look at the 24 elders seeing them bend over confused them. They too looked at what the elders were looking at. They looked at the same moment a whip connected with the skin on Christ back on seeing this, all the angels of war let out a roar and drew their swords. All of them ready to descend on the earth in fierce anger and kill every1 hurting their King. The world would have come to an end that day if not for God. "Michael stand down" came the surprising order. "What??? God did you just say stand down?" God raises an eyebrow "you dare to question me?" Contrite and bowing Michael responds "am sorry my God. I was confused and angry that's why I stopped thinking. Please Majesty forgive". "Rise. All of you rise. I understand and I am proud of you all however this battle is not against man and it cannot be fought with swords. This is a love war. I have choosen to give my son so mankind would know just how much I love them. He would be put to death." A collective gasp went round the inhabitants of heaven. "I know it is a lot to ask you to sit and watch your King being beaten, speared and killed but remember he is me and I would sit by and watch it is not going to be a walk in the park but I would do it. If I can, then you should too."
Meanwhile on earth while the circle waited for a response from Michael that was yet to come, they decided to find ways to help Christ so in the night they visited Pilate’s wife. They said and did nothing but stood and stared at her yet she was very afraid. As afraid as anybody who finds himself surrounded by over 10 feet tall men with blazing swords by their sides would be. Early the next morning, she sent a message to her husband telling him to have nothing to do with Christ unjust death because of what happened during the sleeping hours.
Back in heaven, as the inhabitant watched Peter deny Christ, the angels could not control their astonishment and confusion “My God I don’t understand if your son dies Lucifer would win!” said angel Eerbied. “Righteous Lord it is not our place to question you, you have given that privilege to man only but just out of curiosity how you can love these ungrateful mortals to the point where you give up your only son! It is amazing!”  Declared angel Nura. Just as Nura spoke they notice God’s face is clenched in pain again this prompts them to turn and look at the earth and they witness the mock coronation the soldiers were performing for Christ. Michael who had been sitting quietly all through got up. “And where do you think you are going Michael?” Michael looks at God with reverence “I come to ask that I may go and stand with Christ. I just want to be close to him one more time. Please God.” God smiled. A smile that said ‘I know more than you do’ and at the same time it said ‘I know how you feel’  “You may go. All of you who want to go may go. But do not interfere I repeat............” He fell silent the 24 elders understand why it was the same instance that the cross was placed on Christ shoulders. Some angels sat quietly with God too sad to look at what was being done to Christ but they might as well have looked for every time Christ felt pain they could see it on God’s face they heard him scream even as a spear entered the sides of Christ. They heard the scream again and again every time the nails entered the body of Christ.
Multitudes of angels left heaven that day and came to stand by Christ on earth. They were a sight to behold. Thousands of 10 feet+ beings stood by helpless and watched while their King was nailed to the cross. If only the soldiers who were mocking Christ and the ones who nailed him could see them they would die of fear. The angels stood their heads bowed as they helplessly watched. Demons also in their multitudes stood before the angels jeering at them and mocking them. Apollyon stood toe to toe with Michael tipped his head up and said “you should have come over to Lucifer’s side and you would have been a winner today.” Then he laughed deep and loud you could tell he was happy. Probably for the first time in ages.
At the same time, Lucifer stood and screamed at God “I told you I would win didn’t I? You love ungrateful creatures. You know what your problem is? You think too much of yourself you think you are the high and mighty one you won’t share right? Well they are all mine all mine I say. And even better I have your son. I have a plan that would make you abandon him completely. You are predictably holy, and cannot behold that which is sin. I would make him sin” And just like in any well choreographed dance, as soon as Lucifer said that the demons stood and began to heap on Christ the different sins the devil had collected from everyman –born and yet unborn- they heaped on and on and on for a long time and as they did God looked away from Christ. Now we hear Christ voice in protest screaming “Dadddyyyyyy! Fatherrrrrrrr!  Don’t look away. Please don’t leave me like this” God could not look at his son again no matter how much he wanted to he couldn’t. At this the devil began to dance and laugh “he is mine now I would take him to hell and torture him knowing you would feel every single pain I inflict. O I would enjoy this.”
This is the day we celebrate as Good Friday. It is not just a public holiday it is a day to reflect remember and rejoice for this was the day man received the opportunity to call God father.
I am happy to have this day.

JOURNEY TO SELF.............!!!

JOURNEY TO WHO I AM

Next time, next time someone asks me who I am
I’ll tell them. I’ll tell them that I’m - an amazing
God like specimen painstakingly crafted in God’s own
Image and I’ll mean every single word of it.

For far too long all I felt was invisible
I didn’t like myself, couldn’t recognise my self
So every time I stepped out confidence was lacking
And questions were abounding

Looking around me didn’t help, it just made
Me wonder why my face wasn’t spotless
Why I wasn’t taller, why my boobs didn’t grow quicker
My hips weren’t wider, my waist not smaller
My teeth not whiter, my stomach not flatter
My grades not higher, my swag not flyer
This  could go on forever, basically the world made me wonder

And every time I stepped out confidence
was lacking And questions were abounding
So I just wanted to be invisible. With teenage
years came cross continental migration and that
Didn’t help matters. You see this new culture was
such a frustration, my new peers – I couldn’t understand
a fraction, with so much opportunity, their dreams
Somehow never achieved conception

Morality was missing in action
Fun was identifiable by a long list of regrettable actions
They existed just to be the centre of attraction
And I to them was a side distraction
My name - they mangled beyond recognition
My accent - they ripped to shreds with no contrition
My feelings they crushed with no emotion
And I couldn’t find myself in all of their commotion
So I felt invisible, wanted reality to match my emotion
Felt invisible craved a confidence that only comes with
True self-definition, So I set out to find myself

At first, I moulded myself into the image of their perfection
And when they said I was beautiful, I guess --I was
I lived for those moments when showering me with compliments;
I saw glimmers of that confidence that person I so badly wanted to be

I didn’t know who I was so I sold whatever that was at a high price
Just so I could hear someone say you are beautiful
Choosing to forget that when he called me beautiful he wasn’t giving me an upgrade
He simply acknowledged what God made,

I became almost all their expectations
Only to find that the new me - wasn’t matching my expectations
I didn’t know who I was
But I had to be - I was I had to be worth more than that

With that realisation I took my first steps on the road to who I am
Saw a sign defining bondage as allowing my self worth
To be determined by others’ subjective limitations
So I found a standard that wasn’t subject to permutations
Salvation set me free from self-imposed incarceration
Now my self worth is defined only by the Creator not his creations
I opened Psalm 139 and found my true definition
It wasn’t linked to my profession, or my current situation
It didn’t fluctuate with emotion; in fact it made me rise out of
Depression, I opened it and it said
I am fearfully and wonderfully made
And with that discovery history was made

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
So if for some reason you  don’t behold mine
It doesn’t dismantle what God made
My confidence has totally been remade
And my value it’s not manmade
I know who I am so I can embrace what I am
I’m 5 foot 4 of intelligent, beautiful awkward awesomeness
Who is fearfully and wonderfully made

On those days when I wake up daring to forget what God has made
When the confidence of yesterday has somehow been mislaid
I react on purpose until my misgivings are allayed
Repeating to myself in the mirror of life
I am not invisible; I am not worthless
I am not invisible; I am not worthless
I am not invisible; I am not worthless
I am 5 foot 4 of intelligent, beautiful awkward awesomeness
Who is weirdly, wonderfully, fearfully and awesomely made
And I dare you to prove different
Because this is who I am

An amazing god like specimen painstakingly crafted in God’s own image
This is who I am. Now tell me,
Who are you?
