One of Naija's finest Spoken Word Poet, Obii....!!!

Obii is a lady that came from nowhere, (okay somewhere that we did not know before), and won the maiden edition of the Naija Poetry Slam competition hosted by Bassey Ikpi in 2012.

She was at WORD UP Volume 2 and 3, and she blew us away with words. This piece done in the video below by Obii is one of the best spoken word poem I have ever heard.

If you doubt this, just listen down to the last line, and I bet that you will shout.  Do holla back with your comments, and don't lie that you did not shout o!!!

Obii will be live at WORD UP Volume 5 coming up on August 17, 2013 at TerraKuluture Hall, Victoria Island, Lagos from 2pm.

The Business of Spoken Word Poetry by Shihan Van Clief

Shihan Van Clief (an Internationally renowned Spoken Word Poet from USA) was in Nigeria in May 2013 for Word Up Volume 4. Prior to the event, he was at a workshop (organised by i2X Media), to talk on "The Business of Spoken Word Poetry."
Shihan has, for over 17 years, been living solely on income from Poetry Performances and Poetry related activities. He has an exclusive Sponsorship deal with Sports Giant, Adidas and is the current voice for The Sprite Street Mix, a radio program broadcasted in over 13 countries in Africa. He has been featured on various media outlets including 7 appearances on 6 seasons of Def Poetry, and on commercial adverts of Nike, Reebok and the NBA.
Who is better to talk about the Business of Spoken Word Poetry than someone who is into it full time 24 7?

Below are video clips of the workshop and his adverts for Adidas. Enjoy and learn.........!!!!

To win, all she did was show up!!!

She is 15 years old, and in order to win her first ever Slam Poetry Competition, all she did was show up.

Titilayo Mabogunje came with guns blazing on Sunday June 30th 2013 at War Of Words Slam Poetry, "she no even look Uche face" and took no prisoners. From the 1st round to the 3rd and last round, she had the highest score. She practically had the judges eating from her palms.

Personally, I am not too shocked she won. Ok, a little shocked, but not too much. You know why? Well, she is Atilola Moronfolu's protege.

If you know Atilola, then you will know Titi had no choice but to win, and win she did.

Just in case you are wondering what Titi said, did, performed or maybe did not say, that made her win. Well, check out the video below and get wowed!!!

The 15 finalists for War Of Words (Slam Poetry Competition).

For this maiden edition of War Of Words, we had a total of 23 video entries/ submission from Spoken Word Poets in different parts of Nigeria using the theme "In it to win."

We even had entries from 10 and 16 year old females poets. However, only 15 poets can be selected to compete on stage at the main event on Sunday June 30, 2013.

So after plenty argument and disagreement, our in-house judges finally reached a consensus.  Though we must mention that picking the 15 finalists was no easy task. We know and appreciate the efforts put into all the video submissions.

We know each poet is unique in his or her own right and trying to say a poet is better than the other can be perceived as an injustice to creativity. Thus, we say a big THANK YOU to the poets who entered for the competition. But the rules of the competition limits us to 15 poets, so we have to choose, and this we did.

The 15 finalists for the maiden War Of Words -Slam Poetry Competition in no particular order, are as follows:

  1. K-Mex
  2. Alexandra Zion
  3. Titilayo Mabogunje
  4. D Ray
  5. Felix D Great
  6. Seye La Poet
  7. Osowe Olugbenga

  9. Neofloetry
  10. Bionic
  11. Uzbek
  12. Emeka Otoba
  13. Kemistry
  14. Dare Dan
  15. Saint Rhymes
Wild Cards (in case one of the chosen 15 poets does not show up). To be chosen as listed:
  1. Momodu Ehiz
  2. El-Karis
  3. Mac Dave
Thank you all, and you are cordially invited to  "War Of Words.”

Date is Sunday June 30th 2013

Time is 3 pm.
